Description:
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Printmaker to join our studio and production team. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-quality editioned prints and limited-run artworks across traditional and digital print techniques. This hands-on role involves studio management, press operation, technical problem-solving, and close collaboration with artists, curators and production staff to deliver work that meets artistic, technical and conservation standards.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain printshop equipment: etching presses, screen-print frames, lithography stones/plates, relief blocks, digital printing rigs and related tools.
- Produce editioned prints and one-off works across techniques (intaglio, relief, lithography, screenprint, monotype, digital/process printing), ensuring consistent high quality and accurate colour reproduction.
- Prepare plates, screens and matrices; mix inks and coatings; manage registration, burnishing and finishing.
- Assist artists through proofing, colour trials and plate/screen adjustments; translate artist briefs into viable production plans.
- Manage editioning, numbering and documentation for each work (condition reports, edition records, materials lists).
- Coordinate fabrication needs with external workshops or specialist vendors (foundries, binders, framers) when required.
- Maintain a clean, safe and well-organised studio; implement health & safety and hazardous materials protocols (solvent handling, ventilation, PPE).
- Manage consumables, press maintenance schedules and basic equipment repairs; source materials and maintain inventory.
- Support installation, packaging and shipping logistics for prints and exhibitions.
- Run occasional print workshops or demonstrations for artists, students or visitors when requested.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Fine Art, Printmaking, or equivalent professional experience in a print studio.
- Minimum 2–4 years practical experience working in a professional print studio, arts organisation or as an independent printmaker.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating technical skill in one or more print disciplines and finished editioned works (include images and brief project notes).
- Proven ability to operate etching presses, screen print equipment and/or digital print workflows; familiarity with both analogue and digital processes preferred.
- Good colour management skills and working knowledge of inks, paper types and conservation-friendly materials.
- Excellent workshop practice: safe handling of tools, solvents and heavy equipment; attention to studio housekeeping and risk mitigation.
- Strong communication and collaborative skills when working with artists and production teams.
- Good project management abilities: edition tracking, documentation and meeting production deadlines.
- Fluency in English; additional languages an asset. Willingness to travel to installation sites if required.
